WOO Leadership: WOO is led by inspiring women who are committed to the future of ocular oncology:
Mission of Women in Ocular Oncology (WOO)
The mission of Women in Ocular Oncology (WOO) is to support and promote opportunities for mentorship and growth of women in the field of ocular oncology through academic collaboration, networking and fellowship among members.
WOO HISTORY:
Looking around the ISOO conference in Cleveland in 2013, Dr. Berry was impressed with the number of young female ocular oncologists in the room. She wanted a place where they could join together and provide mentorship and discussion around issues relating to women in medicine and women in ocular oncology. She was joined by Zelia Correa, Isabella Phan, and Jasmine Francis to be present at the next meeting. They developed a mission, a logo, a FB page, and a pin. By the 2015 meeting in Paris, we made it into the ISOO newsletter and held a small lunch together.
It was such a hit that by the 2017 meeting in Sydney, we had nearly 60 ISOO members on our membership list, and we held a small symposium focused on mentorship & opportunities for women, led by Zelia Correa. We filled the room!
From 2022 (Leiden) onwards, WOO has been integral to the biennial ISOO meetings. In Leiden, WOO led a WOO symposium entitled WOO perspectives on Diversity, equity, and Inclusion in 2022.
Carol Shields: How has inclusion changed for women in 2022, and are we there yet?
Helen Dimaras: How can we intentionally provide opportunities in research and research representation to create opportunities for DEI broadly within ocular oncology
Renelle Lim: the role of DEI in practice building and growth for a new ocular oncologist in town — new perspectives
Martina Angi: state of affairs for WOO and women in ophthalmology
Panel discussion to be moderated by Jesse Berry
Looking Ahead
With more than 100 members and growing, we are excited about our future. To continue supporting our members, we are planning more events for 2024 and beyond.
